When You Change The Whole World Resists You
March 21st, 2006
When clients work their 100 Day Plan, they sometimes meet with resistance from others. It may be a family member, a coworker, boss, or just life in general that seems to block their progress. The good news is that this is normal and to be expected.
We are all interconnected. We are also part of a larger, complex system. Systems Theory is helpful in understanding the why of it all, but if you want just the highlights of it as it relates to coaching:
- If one element of a system changes, the whole system changes
- Your systems response to change is nonlinear: it doesn’t always happen in “real-time”
- You may encounter a system that is change-resistant. Families are a great example of this, and there is a whole school of knowledge on the subject
My recommendation is that you are about to embark on a big change in your life, it’s best to tell everyone. You will find that people are more likely to support you then resist you. You may also enjoy reading one man’s experience with this phenomenon which he calls “social drag.“
